Orchestra Omaha will present its third concert of the 2009-10 season on Sunday, February 21, at 3:00 p.m. The concert, titled "New Worlds," will showcase the two winners of the annual Youth Concerto Competition. In addition, the orchestra will perform the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World) by Czech composer Antonin Dvo'ak. Orchestra Omaha's Youth Concerto Competition was established during the 2006-07 season as a means of providing exceptionally talented young musicians with the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a symphony orchestra and professional conductor. Orchestra Omaha is the only organization providing this unique performance opportunity to all music students in the Omaha metropolitan area. The winners of this year's competition are Luke Witchger, violin, and Nadia Maudhoo, violin. Senior Division: Luke Witchger, violin Luke is a senior at Creighton Prep in Omaha, and is currently a student of Anne Nagosky. A previous winner of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestra (OAYO) Concerto Competition, Luke also served as Concertmaster of the National High School Music Institute Orchestra. Luke will be performing the first movement of the Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 22 by Henryk Wieniawski. Junior Division: Nadia Maudhoo, violin Nadia is an eighth grader at Russell Middle School in Omaha, and currently studies violin with Anne Nagosky. She has placed first in a number of competitions, including the MTNA West Central Division Competition, the OAYO Concerto Competition, and the Lucy Weed String Competition. Nadia has also been invited to perform with the Omaha Symphony on two occasions. Nadia will be performing the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28, by Camille Saint-Saens. The "New Worlds" performance takes place on Sunday, February 21, at the Lutheran Church of the Master West Campus, 1200 North 181st Court, at 3:00 p.m. There is no charge for admission, and the concert is open to the public.
