Heartland Walk for Warmth Returns for Third Year

The third annual Heartland Walk for Warmth will take place February 26, 2010 at 6 p.m. at the Heartland of America Park. This annual event, headed up by local utility companies Black Hills Energy, Metropolitan Utilities District and Omaha Public Power District, raises funds in support of the energy assistance programs managed by the Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way of the Midlands.

These funds help metropolitan area seniors, people with disabilities and others in financial need to keep warm in the coldest months of winter and cool in the extreme heat of summer. More than $75,000 has been raised from the first two walks in 2008 and 2009. However, in these difficult economic times, the need for energy assistance for those in financial distress has never been greater.

The event has averaged 700 walkers for the cause each year and expects to attract 1,000 participants in 2010. Walkers are encouraged to register online starting January 1, at www.heartlandwalkforwarmth.org, however they may register on-site the day of the walk as well. A $20 entry fee is tax deductible as a donation to the American Red Cross and is nonrefundable.
