Q: How do I choose glasses that my child will actually wear, without breaking the bank?

A: Helping your child choose a pair of glasses can be fun. The first thing to do is let the optician you are working with know your desires; for example what your price range is, if you want a metal or plastic frame, and what are some of your child's favorite colors. The optician can then present your child with choices that fit your needs and wishes. Together you and the optician can guide your child to a pair that will fit well, look great and be in a price range you are comfortable with. Getting your child involved in the glasses selection will go a long way toward motivating them to wear the glasses as prescribed.

Q: How do I prolong the life of my eyeglasses?

A: Proper care and maintenance of your eyeglasses is easy, but it does take some time and pre-planning. It is important to clean your glasses on a regular basis, preferably daily. Rinse your glasses under running water and dry with a clean soft 100 percent cotton cloth. It is also important to put your glasses into their case when not in use to protect them from inadvertent damage. Use both hands when you put on or remove your glasses so that there is not undue stress put on the temple hinges. Plan to visit your optician every few months to have the adjustment checked, any loose screws tightened and get them ultrasonically cleaned. Ongoing care for your glasses will allow you to maximize their life expectancy.
